The Journey That Needed No Words

A chance encounter in the remote landscapes of Cape Verde became one of the most unforgettable lessons of my travels.

Some of the most extraordinary journeys are not defined by the places we reach, but by the people we meet along the way.

During my travels through the lesser-known islands of Cape Verde, I set out in search of a remote beach I had discovered through months of research - a place that, according to local residents, almost no visitors ever reached. Reaching it was an adventure in itself. The route crossed an arid landscape of volcanic desert and shifting sand dunes, with no signs to follow and only the promise of an untouched coastline waiting somewhere beyond the horizon.

As I searched for the path, I met an elderly local man.

I greeted him in Portuguese. He smiled but did not understand. I tried Creole, hoping we might find common ground, but once again our words failed us. He replied in a local dialect that was completely unfamiliar to me.

For a brief moment, we stood facing one another in silence.

Yet neither of us seemed discouraged. We simply smiled.

The midday sun was relentless, flooding the desert with shimmering heat. The sand beneath our feet was almost too hot to stand on, and the only sounds were the wind drifting across the dunes and the silence of the vast landscape around us.

The old man's weathered face seemed shaped by a lifetime beneath that same unforgiving sun. Every line told a story. His calm eyes looked beyond the horizon with quiet certainty, as though he knew every path the desert had ever hidden.

Without a word, he bent down, picked up a dry wooden stick, and knelt in the sand.

Using a few small stones as landmarks, he carefully drew the landscape before us, tracing the dunes and marking the direction I should follow until the coastline would finally reveal itself.

His hands became the map.

The sand became our shared language.

Not a single word was understood between us, yet everything was perfectly clear.

I followed the path exactly as he had drawn it, crossing the endless dunes until, just as he had promised, the Atlantic suddenly appeared before me. An untouched stretch of coastline unfolded in complete silence- a place of extraordinary beauty that rewarded every step of the journey.

That day reminded me that the most universal language is neither spoken nor written.

It is kindness.

Travel has a remarkable way of dissolving the boundaries that language alone cannot cross. In that remote corner of Cape Verde, two strangers from completely different worlds shared a single purpose. One was searching for nature's hidden masterpiece; the other simply chose to help.

I never learned his name.

He never knew mine.

Yet many years later, I still remember his face and the simple lines he drew in the sand.

Some maps guide us to extraordinary places.

Others lead us to a deeper understanding of humanity.
